Jun Hyoungsan explores ‘non-musical sounds.’ Jun focuses on the potentials of ‘noises’ and mainly works through sound performances or sound installations. Our senses are bound to certain practices or norms, and thus we almost always sort sounds into one of the following categories: noise, acoustics, or music. To break away from such tendencies, Jun creates what he calls “sound fabric,” which is re-mediated through his sculptural installations that appear like both machines and instruments. By offering sound in structural forms, the artist disrupts the division between machine and instrument, and by materializing sound into visible objects, he recreates hybrid forms of sound’s existence. Jun Hyoungsan’s inharmonious and off-beat sound prompts the audience to actively search for musical notes and directly encounter sounds.
