Lee Jangwon takes a metaphysical approach to analyzing the structures and essence of nature. His algorithmic and mechanical structures are used as sculptural elements that convey the nature that he wishes to reveal. Rather than being understood as artistic sculptures, they reveal the subtle relationship between technology and art. Lee uses a variety of methods in the process, for example, having mirrors point to the sun or reflect the sunlight. In doing so, he does not conceptualize or objectify the sun as aesthetic subjects, but instead, presents the sun itself in visual forms. Lee Jangwon’s sculptures are sometimes media through which he conveys an idea, and at other times they are mechanical reconstructions of the sun understood algorithmically. Such experiments by the artist promote the use nature as a media through which interactions between artistic attitude and scientific technology are encouraged.
