Installation and media artist Ye Seung Lee is interested in how we recognize different social phenomena and eras in the contemporary media environment. Her work has been heavily focused on concepts of hybridism and ambiguity between imagination and reality.
In this exhibition, Lee presents an interactive installation on machine learning and its results. The corpus for machine learning in the project was Shan Hai Jing, a collection of myths from the Warring States Period in China. This offers an alternative to Westernized thinking witnessed not only in novels, movies, and games but also in data algorithms. Lee takes Eastern ways of thinking and Shan Hai Jing, which lacks perspectives or hierarchy, creates algorithms out of them, and applies those algorithms to various narrative structures.
