Interdisciplinary artist and designer Eun Young Park and designer and maker Hyun Parke present My room in a suitcase. Using speculative design methodologies, the project begins with the question, “How do we secure the private space–namely home, room, interior fixtures and furniture–in the realities of the contemporary lifestyle that is constantly on the move?” The inquiry into movements and space spans the present post-COVID-19 moment to future concerns of protecting mobility and private spaces.
Park and Parke collaborate on the common interest of inflatables and soft robotics. Park highlights the playful and light shapes and the impermanence of inflatables, as well as the malleable shapes and the delicate yet emotional movements of soft robots. On the other hand, Parke focuses on designing structures strengthened by air pressure, in addition to algorithmizing and expanding design.
Bringing two artists with their own particular methods within a similar field, My room in a suitcase merges and expands existing perspectives and methodologies by experimental performance and changes of air compression structures.
